On the weekend of 24/25 October, Simon Boylan represented the Club at the Zone 13 Champion of Champions event held at Randwick. Against some well credentialed opposition from the first round, Simon defeated the Club Champions from Grandviews, Tigers Five Dock and Wests Leagues in successive games before going down in the Semi Final to previous Australia Title winner and 2019 Runner up David Ferguson from Engadine.
There were plenty of spectators asking who this South Cronulla Club is and now they know!
Simon will back up with partner Steve Heaps to contest the Champion of Champion Pairs on 7/8 November at Alexandria Erskineville. Good Luck Boys, keep that flag flying!
Congratulations to Steve Heaps who made it all the way to the Final of the 2020 Zone 13 Presidents Reserves singles going down 21-21 to young Travis Moran, a rising star from Engadine. Steve played well all tournament and led Travis early but just couldn’t stay with him. Congratulations also to Simon Boylan (Quarter finals) Tim Johnson (4th Round) Ken English (3rd Round) and Bob Luumb (2nd round) for reresenting the Club at this event.
In the Veterans section the Club was represented by John Paterson, Alan Hewson, Jim Twiss, Stev Kritzler, Allan Greig, Geoff Bursill, Ray Power and Andrew Schneller (who progressed to the Quarter Finals).
This year marked the biggest representation by far in the Zone events, including teams entered in Pairs, Triples and Fours. These events are not only a great way to improve your bowls but fantastic social events as well and we encourage all our bowlers to step up and have a go

With 2019 drawing to a close, so are the final Club competitions. This Saturday 7th December will see new member Tim Johnson take on John Hvas in the final of the Presidents Singles. On the adjoining rink, Club President Ken English and Carol Coady will take on Vice President Simon Boylan and Alana Bursill in the Final of the inaugural Mixed Pairs competition. Good Luck to all players
The popular Friday night graded pairs competition is also getting to the pointy end with the 2 pool winners to be decided next week and the final to be held on Friday 13th. This competition has been well supported by players and spectators alike and played in a great fun spirit which is what was intended. Well done to all.
Saturday 30th November saw a nine member team travel to Double Bay Bowling Club to compete in the final of the 2019 Summer Shield. With Alan Hewson, Geoff Moses and Andrew Schneller taking the scenic route via Luna Park and Lavender Bay, we were off to a nervous (and late) start. Alan’s team of the above mentioned and Ray Power were unfazed and led the Fours match from Start to finish. Jim Twiss, Peter Bryant and Geoff King managed to pull back a big deficit to only narrowly lose their match, leaving Simon Boylan and Steve Heaps to maintain their lead for the final 3 ends. Despite a near disaster giving up a 5 on the 3rd last end, Simon an Steve regrouped and maintained their composure to win the last 2 ends giving a5 shot win on the Big Board and see South Cronulla crowned Div 3 2019 Summer Shield Champions. Well done to all involved
The Summer Shield is a concept started in Zone 12 and since their amalgamation with Zone 13, now extended to those clubs. Teams consist of a Pairs, Triples and Fours teams and compete in a similar format to traditional Pennants, with 2 points for each rink and 2 points for the Bigboard. There are 3 x divisions based on Pennants gradings of 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7
Having won all three rinks against Roselands a few weeks back, South Cronulla this week hosted Gladstone Park and despite losing in the Fours, secured 6 points courtesy of big wins in the Pairs and Triples. With 2 wins from 2 in Pool 2, we now proceed to a Final in a couple of weeks against the successful Eastern Suburbs Club from Pool 1. Good Luck to all players
Congratulations to Ken English, Peter Bryant and Geoff Johnson who triumphed over Andrew Schneller, Bob Lumb and John Pickering in the HCap Triples Final. In a hard fought match Ken’s team trailed early but managed to claw back into the game to come up with the win. Well done Guys.
Draws are now posted for both the Mixed Pairs and Presidents singles. Given our limited rink space and the number of players involved in the Summer Shield, please make every effort to play your game on time. Unless you are involved in Summer Shield, you will be expected to play by the nominated ate, arrange a substitute player or else forfeit. Those representing the Club can if necessary, play their game later but the Match committee asks you to do so as early as possible to minimise disruptions to the rest of the draw
The $20,000 Tweed Heads Fours this year attracted all Australia’s champions from the Commonwealth games plus two Sydney teams – Taren Point and South Cronulla.
Eight games of 14 ends held over three days saw Geoff Bursill and Ken English alternating front end with Alan Hewson and John Paterson alternating back end over 8 tough games.
South Cronulla were ahead 8-4 in the second last game after 8 ends against the eventual prize money winners, only to miss out by a few points.
Coming into the final round South Cronulla took control over their last opponents to win 17-13 and to advance three places only to miss out on prize money by a few points.
Tweed Heads Manager – Wayne Turley (Photo) welcomed Taren Point and South Cronulla warmly as two of the most progressive clubs in Sydney.
The boys inform us they will also be bringing back a new game “One Bowl Singles”, a jackpot competition for summer Friday afternoons.
Well done Guys, great to see more Members flying our colours around the country
